AMHigley's Co-Op Program

(Cooperative Education Program)

AMHigley's cooperative education construction program is designed to introduce college students to office and field experiences in the commercial construction profession. The internship exposes the student to a wide array of professional interactions among management, project managers, field workers, consulting professionals, clients, and related trades, exploring the role of each within a project. Ultimately, this program intends to enhance internal abilities by gaining on-site knowledge of how a project idea becomes a construction reality.

REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of one (1) year of satisfactorily completed coursework in civil engineering, construction management, or related field, with emphasis on civil, environmental, structural, mechanical, electrical, or plumbing. Qualified candidates should have a basic understanding and knowledge of areas of responsibility for this position.

Qualified candidates must be self-motivated, team players. Excellent math, problem-solving, and relationship management skills are essential. Dedication and a strong work ethic are a must.

CO-OP 1 | Beyond Bricks and Mortar: The intern will work with corporate managers, project managers, or field superintendents on a variety of construction tasks to understand one or more of the practical aspects of converting an idea into a finished construction project. The Beyond Bricks and Mortar internship gives the intern an overall introduction to AMHigley & construction. Responsibilities may include the following:

  • Preconstruction (Office): Reading drawings, performing quantity takeoff, compiling estimates & proposals, building budgets, attending design team meetings, performing scope reviews, and other pre-construction services. 
  • Project Controls (Office/Field): Schedule Development & site visits/schedule updates.
  • Customer Service Group (Office/Field): Overview of Yard office & Shadow CSG projects.
  • Safety (Office/Field): Perform Jobsite Safety audits, attend safety training and seminars, & other safety services.
  • Business Development (Office): Marketing, CRM software, & RFPs
  • Jobsite (Field): Reading blueprints, and RFI’s, coordinating submittals, maintaining job logs, attending Owner-Architect-Contractor meetings, participating in site and safety inspections, conducting inventories, & troubleshooting.

CO-OP 2 | AMHigley Field: The intern will be a supporting member of the team, working directly with a project Engineer, project manager, or field superintendent on a specific project.

  • Communicate with other professional and specialty consultants including architects and engineers.
  • Study through observing an assigned construction site to better understand various design and construction techniques, and interaction with the public, clients, regulatory agencies, and trade contractors.

CO-OP 3 | Leadership and the Field: The intern will be given daily responsibilities to complete on their own, simulating a full-time Project Engineer position and developing leadership skills throughout the project.

  • Communicate with other professional and specialty consultants including architects and engineers.
  • Study through observing an assigned construction site to better understand various design and construction techniques, and interaction with the public, clients, regulatory agencies, and trade contractors.
  • Coordinate with the project manager or superintendent to ensure the day-to-day responsibilities are complete.
